With a trifecta of research conducted at the world-famous Center for Creative Leadership, personal stories from people at various points on the leadership journey, and a wonderfully entertaining writing style, this book has something for leaders at every level. Moving from individual contributor to manager is not just a leap in level. It's a categorically different job. This book does a great job of highlighting the science supporting why managers need to shift their focus from self to others and provides great anecdotes and practical examples of how to become successful in the move.

Adding this to the list of books for my MBA students to check out. Most leaders don't get formal leadership training until 42 or later if ever -- so leadership learning is survival of the fittest. Bill's passion for helping new leaders be successful from the get go boosts leader confidence and reduces the chaos for seasoned leaders with full plates. This books is well-researched, easy to digest and totally on point. It's a must read guide for first time leaders and a nice refresher for emerging leaders with some spots to polish.

Let me tell you — the business and management section of most bookstores is bleak. However, this book stood out as one that seemed less distressing and focused on money.

Pollak has built her career providing advice and coaching to others, and with this book she is targeting the millennial generation, as they are the ones starting to step into leadership roles for the first time. Now, I am technically Generation X, but a lot of what she shares in this book still applies.

She starts with a history of business and management philosophies, which is a good place to find more books to read on this topic. The way she presents the information worked really well for me; when I finished reading it I went through and copied down all the parts I really wanted to remember into a book so I would follow up on the items. My only complaint is this one section, where she talks about outsourcing what you can. An intern should be learning about whatever field they are working in, so unless they are interning as a virtual assistant, suggesting people get one to hang curtains strikes me as inappropriate.

This book has probably 50 different recommendations, each one is valuable and fills a gap in the total picture of being a good leader. I've read a lot of books in this genre, and she passes on all of those best suggestions. There were very few pieces of this book that I didn't like. There was one sentence that flabbergasted me. One does not need to take time-of-day into consideration for those in the southern hemisphere. I'll be buying a copy and referencing it again later. The next generation of leaders and those already leading would do well to read and implement the guidance in this book.

Becoming the Boss: New Rules for the Next Generation of Leaders by Lindsey Pollak

Some statements might seem like common sense, but they are neatly put out for you to easily return to the book when you need guidance. Think of it in this way: Initially I had to take a few deep breaths because this book is brazenly self-promotional and, to my British sensibility, Pollak comes across as crowing, but as I settled in to her relentlessly positive tone the reading got easier. I think it's aimed at slightly less experienced managers than myself as an older millennial, there were sections that didn't teach me much but some suggestions and recommendations were less obvious but valuable.

This was equally useful and I look forward to being able to implement some of her suggestions--I'll be a board member for the first time this year and I hope at some point to advise MSW students, so I know it will come in handy. In order to be an effective leader, familiarize yourself with leadership fundamentals, such as how to manage employees, use the right networking skills and present yourself in the best way possible. A lot of focus on entrepreneurship and small business. A lot of leadership books have similar advice and this is surely no exception. Add to your list if you are under 35 and building leadership skills, or if you are over 35 and you're having some trouble connecting with the youngest people in your office.

Initially started reading as I have an interest in generation differences, and the author does provide wisdom in this area and impact on future leadership. Book includes very practical tips for those new to management - I will certainly recommend to all new leaders in my company and some Baby Boomers too, a different perspective can never hurt.
