The focus is on psychology and counselors, but anyone can find something interesting and inspiring in the stories found in "Journeys to Professional Excellence: Bemak and Robert K. The diversity of the writers helps make the collection a mix of personal history, professional history and social history. The blend makes each narrative unique and it can either open the reader's eyes to an experience different from one's own or the reader may find something that sounds familiar.
I think for professionals and students in the field will get more out of the reading given its focus but I still felt it to be a worthwhile and educational read. One person found this helpful.

Written by Professor Nick Clements, one of the world's foremost experts on masculinity and rites of passage, this compelling story allows us to gain understanding and insight into the modern man's journey. Combining humour, wisdom and emotionally charged stories the book explains how a lot of men think and experience the separate worlds of work, relationships and feelings. It is full of advice and guidance for us all, and incorporates exercises and life style development work which has been practiced by hundreds of people over the last 20 years. The Alpha Wolf is both novel and real account - inspired by his own contact with a remarkable healer.
The main character, Roger, is a prototype of city ambition and narcissism, who is basically concerned with what he can get for himself. That message is at the core of this novel. The Alpha Wolf tracks the journey of one such man, Roger. From being what I call an 'alpha boy' - laddish, successful, ruthless, without a conscience - through disappointment and vulnerability, to finding himself and becoming an 'alpha wolf' - caring, compassionate, willing to commit to a long term relationship.
A journey most women want their men to undertake.

It describes a typical arc of development for a modern man, he makes his job the centre of his life, he is financially rewarded for his dedication, he aspires to a culturally understood and encouraged 'successful lifestyle' This rapid ascension towards acclaim, ambition and greed almost inevitably leads to a plateau of discontent and disappointment.
In the book, Brian becomes his teacher, he is a beggar, ugly, dirty, and therefore, in Roger's terms, a man with no future, no value. However, in his deep despair Roger realises he actually needs what Brian has. Brian has no money, but he has a deep spiritual discipline and belief which sustains him in a completely different way. The Alpha Wolf is an essential read for women who want to know if it is possible for their men to change from immature lads into mature men.
As the book illustrates, it won't be a simple or easy journey, but it is worthwhile. The bumpy ride Roger makes from career orientated selfish user of humanity, to a caring and considerate human being is pertinent to us all. The skills he learns and shares along the way are relevant to both women and men.
