Mar 24, Ellie Oberth rated it really liked it Shelves: A wonderful setting - island life. Apr 19, Victoria Allman rated it it was amazing. Having spent a lot of time in the Bahamas, I was thoroughly impressed with how well Marcia Talley captures the feel of the islands and her people. It is clear in reading Without a Grave that Talley has spent a lot of time researching her mystery set in the Abacos.
What starts off as an introduction to the islands quickly turns into a well laid-out mystery of strange goings-on at the islands luxury resort, The Tamarind Tree. With Hurricane Helen threatening to make landfall at any moment, Hanna Iv Having spent a lot of time in the Bahamas, I was thoroughly impressed with how well Marcia Talley captures the feel of the islands and her people. With Hurricane Helen threatening to make landfall at any moment, Hanna Ives, cancer survivor, dives into the murky waters of environmental negligence, family squabbles, and possible murder.
Hannah is a spunky, likable character that I enjoyed getting to know and will look forward to reading more about. Talley's knowledge of both the water and the islands makes this mystery an enjoyable guidebook to the Bahamas, as well--just avoid the dead bodies that seem to always surface in paradise. Victoria Allman author of: A Chef's Journey with Her Captain May 23, Mary rated it it was ok.
I usually enjoy Marcia Talley's books. She has a smooth style.
However in this book Hannah Ives doesn't do much impressive other than running around being helpful while on vacation. The events happen around her, leaving bodies in their wake. I enjoy hearing about the Bahamas, but other than that, not much depth in the story. Nov 12, Eadie rated it really liked it Shelves: This was a cozy mystery that was a fast, easy, interesting read. Marcia Talley captured the feel of the Bahamas and it's inhabitants. The book was very entertaining until the hurricane hit and things got a little edgy. The plot was very well laid out and the characters seemed real.
I would recommend this for those who like cozies or just a quick exciting read. Dec 15, Katie rated it liked it. Wow, apparently there are more of these. Some of the plots and characters are interesting, but the author seems to spend about a quarter or more of the book describing the street, roads and highways she is driving on. As in many cozies, she takes typical dangerous, stupid chances at the end of every book.
What a treat to have another Hannah Ives mystery to enjoy. Marcia Talley continues to be a joy to read. The only problem is having to wait for her next book! One person found this helpful. It had to happen: Little does she know that her sister's intended is an old flame of Kay, the female dance instructor. Putting their misgivings aside they press on in their quest to polish their dancing skills, but when Kay and Hutch are cajoled into entering a televised dance competition things heat up: Ruth sees red, only this time it's blood. When one of the dance partners winds up in the ICU fighting for life, Hannah must drawn on her sleuthing skills to untangle the mess, and hopefully save Ruth's and Hutch's relationship in the process.
An original tale, and a light, entertaining read. If you enjoy Dead Man Dancing, there are nearly a dozen more awaiting you.
Without a Grave
I have been a fan of this series from the beginning The same feelings apply to Dead Man Dancing. Lots of real life Annapolis infused into the setting and Hannah is believable. My quibble with this book is the ending. I had a good idea who the murderer was and I was right but the last few pages were so rushed and unsatisfying! After re-reading the final 2 chapters for a fourth time I almost think that the author had an ending a and alternate ending b in mind and somehow managed to mesh bits and pieces of both endings in the final unsatisfying edit. You won't be disappointed with this latest in the Hannah Ives series, but in my opinion, the ending doesn't do justice to the rest of the book.
