The last five essays are more varied. These belong to the important theoretical essays written in the s in which RLS was thinking through his own transition from essayist to novelist. Three others, originally published in magazines, were only republished after his death: Romance is seen as a constant element of human psychology.
It is involved in irrational and amoral responses to circumstances and allows the reader to confront subconscious desires and urges. The essay is indeed a notable contribution to the psychology of reading pleasure.

Peter Ellis bookseller Published: Signed by Author s Book 12mo, author's edition", viii,p. Patrick McGahern Books, Inc. This copy appears unusual in that it includes an actual printed photograph of Stevenson sitting at his writing desk laid on as a frontis opposite the title page.
It appears to be an addititon from the publisher as there are printed boarders on the page around the photo. The leather showing wear and some scuffing to the spine edges and corners, binding solid, boards well attached.

Interior front pastedown shows very light remnants of removed bookplate, some light browning to interior pages and an early charming but unreadable signature dated , otherwise clean and unmarked. A somewhat worn but uncommon copy of this title.

Quarter bound in dark brown leather with five raised bands, gilt titling and floral decoration to spine. Pretty brown and pink marbled boards, endpapers and page edges. Light wear to leather including a tear to bottom corner of upper board.
Marbled boards a little faded. Contents clean without inscriptions or foxing.
