I'm almost sure this is in violation of whatever standards they have put in place there. It's torture for the kids to have to sleep in a cabin under these circumstances but I will not discuss this further as my son made it home safely to us. We had all of our relatives write my son letters and we stuffed it in his luggage and gave some to the teacher to have her give him a letter every day. It was his first time away from him. This camp is needs a little improvement.
My cabin counselor was great but the field instructors are not my favs. When we were doing archery, the field instructor sent me back on the bench for "not following directions". How does she expect me to follow directions if she barely says them? I think some instructors need some training. Alright, I went to this place for a school trip, and my experience was well taught.
The cabin and field instructors were very skilled at teaching us lessons. But, I have to tell about the conditions there. First of all, there is a high possibility that your skin will MELT to the smell of the bathrooms and your nose will burn to the death! The floor is covered with mystery "dirt" and they don't let you flush the toilet unless you take a dump! There are strange chunks on the floor and the water pressure is terrible! Also, they only let me take 2 showers out of five days. I have not gone to High Trails but my oldest went two years ago and my daughter is going later this month.
This staff should be a model example to all camps for how to handle dietary needs. My first daughter is so picky and we were surprised and pleased that they allowed us to send up frozen meals for her. Our second daughter has a life-threatening peanut allergy and they have been excellent in communicating all menu items and their potential allergens. They removed peanut butter from the menu altogether.
And knowing that they have dedicated emergency medical staff on campus is such a comfort. I just got back from camp yesterday! The food is great there and the instructors are great! Overall the hiking is long but super exciting and fun! The bathrooms and showerhouses might be disgusting to people but even with that it was the most amazing experience going here! Through this experience i became more accustomed to nature and got over many fears. If i had a chance to come back in maybe a few years i would definitely go.
Loved my field instructor and the hikes, views, as well as games were all perfect. I miss this place so much now! The staff was great and friendly. They were well educated and worked well wit my 6th grade students. The program was very educational and followed the standards. The food was really good and the facilities were very clean. If you are looking for an outstanding outdoor science school then High Trails is the place for you.
I was hesitant about going to the camp but after my experience I can't wait to go with my new 6th graders next year. My child had attended the camp this year and I would not recommend this school.
The camp counselors may be educated in academics but that doesn't mean they are necessarily suited to be leading kids. The cabin counselor was constantly yelling at the group of kids, as was the trail counselor. One kid tripped on a log during a hike and the counselor proceeded to yell at him instead of ensuring the child was ok. One student had to leave camp already due to an injury during a hike. The students would say "please" and "thank you" but the counselors did not reciprocate the good manners to the kids.
I guess they are not aware of the "lead by example" notion. The kids were constantly hungry as they were given only a limited amount of food each day.
For a snack, they were given the choice of an apple or an orange. Soon, many kids were eating the whole apple including the core as they were so desperately hungry. Some of the activities and classes were fun for the kids but it's the conditions that need great improvement. The main thing my child remembers about the experience was how mean the counselors were. Please also note that any attempts by the parents or school to contact the camp for further enquiries were ignored by the camp.
