On 5 June Plunkett was recalled for the two-match series against Sri Lanka as part of a man squad. Plunkett was picked based on his good from in the County Championship and played in the first match as an impact bowler, bowling short deliveries in an attempt to unsettle the batsmen.

In the second game he took figures of 1—71 and made 44 with the bat as England suffered a narrow defeat. Injury ruled Plunkett out of the rest of the series, which England won 3—2. The third match of the series was abandoned due to rain, but Plunkett took 3—46 in Sri Lanka's innings before the rain came. He did not pick up a wicket in the fourth match of the series, which England won by 6 wickets.
