This is one of two thrillers that Doyle wrote involving ancient Egypt. Bleiler commented on this tale: The Englishman is tired from his journey from England to France and falls asleep in a corner of the museum without hearing that the Museum closed for the night. He awakens around 1 AM and sees the wrinkled man approach a mummy, unwrap it, uncover a beautiful woman, and hug her. The wrinkled man then examines a case holding rings and after looking at many of them, finds the ring he wants, and is overjoyed.
When the Englishman approaches him, the wrinkled man takes him to his room in the museum, for he had a job there as a caretaker, and told him his story. I will not reveal the rest of the tale here other than to say that the man was an Egyptian who developed a solution that gave him an extremely long life, he was about 4, years old, loved the woman who died 4, years ago, and he needed the ring to accomplish the goal he wanted to accomplish for 4, years. I was looking forward to listening to this on a long trip. The reader is fairly clear but attempts to give different accents to characters and does not always carry it off.

How hard could it have been to create a track listing? I found the Scottish accent affected by the reader to be inconsistent and somewhat annoying. But I do give credit for the reading being clear and reasonably paced. Doyle is reputed to have used one of his medical professors, Dr.
Joseph Bell, as a model for Holmes's character. Eventually, Doyle wrote three additional Holmes novels and five collections of Holmes short stories. A brilliant, though somewhat eccentric, detective, Holmes employs scientific methods of observation and deduction to solve the mysteries that he investigates.
Although an "amateur" private detective, he is frequently called upon by Scotland Yard for assistance. Holmes's assistant, the faithful Dr. Watson, provides a striking contrast to Holmes's brilliant intellect and, in Doyle's day at least, serves as a character with whom the reader can readily identify.
