Curt Goffldsmith and Mr. I would like to ask you to join the Ritual Committee, so that we can have the benefit of your advice and participation as we will initiate a number of changes in the services now that we are firmly established in the new Sanctuary.
You may have been aware that the Ritual Committee has been severely hurt by the untimely passing of so many of its loyal members during the last year. In addition to that, I had to accept regretfully the resignation of Leo Mosback, long-time Chairman of the Ritual Committee, because he will move to Arizona. Please try to come and also indicate to me your acceptance.

With kindast ragarda to you and your families, I am, Sincerely yours. I do not think this is either right or just. Jn an age when jewish youth is noticcabl. This issue me to think more deeply on the matter and it immediately occure to me that we know very little about the Jewish Women in the content of our tradition.
Talmud tells us about a woman who came to a Rabbi to ask why different punishments where meted out to those who stood at the golden calf. The Rabbi answered, that it is better to burn the words of the Torah, than to give them to a woman. She had better apply herself to spinning, weaving but not Torah. By tradition she needs to observe only kh three positive comfiyidments: Chala, Mikwah, and Neros. The result is, that a woman can cook, set the table, clean, and light candles but not be counted as part of the minyan for prayer for the very religious observance she has been preparing for.
It came to a point, especially in earlier years , where jewish women would work so the husband could study and as a result the Synagogue became an exclusive sort of mans club. Even the conservative movement! I always count woman in a minian, because I feel it is unjust to deny a kaddish to a family , when ten men are not present. In our own movement we already have a Woman Rabbi and Cantor but my wishes and ideas are somewhat more limited.
A girl over the I age of 13 who has studied with Rabbi and Cantor, who knows more history, tradition, and prayers, than most adults, why must she be denied the essence of jewish maturity: I do not think , that my prpposal will create friction in the congregation but instead will tie us cloiKSJjr together. Although all of you were invited, not all could attend. Lehman Rabbi, flebrew Tabernacle Ft. Please send me a copy of the Bulletin in which this appears. Thank you very much. In fact, could you put me on the distribution list for Tabernacle publications?
That would be much appreciated. Again, thank you very much. Also enclosed is the paper on anti-Semitism of which we spoke. Separate note attached to that. The door bell was answered by a rather short man who smiled broadly when I asked for Cantor Henry Ehrenberg. I nodded nervously as he directed me down a long flight of stairs, across a small auditorium, and up a narrow flight to a landing where we encountered a very distinguished looking gentleman. I had sung the High Holidays in Brooklyn the week past, ray first experience in tenple work. But he questioned me no further, and led me up yet another flight of stairs to what looked like an attic closet of some sort.
I had to crawl over them all to get to my seat. Janet sat next to me and immediately took charge. Cantor Ehrenberg asked me if I could come the next iixDming. I had been hired only for that Friday evening. I said, "No problem - what time? After that service, he invited me for the following Friday evening. Following that Friday evening service, he again asked me if I could make it the following Saturday morning.
At the conclusion of that service he asked me to caiie back the next Friday. I had just survived what we might call an on-the-job audition, and I never looked back! Of course, I did not intend to stay 23 years, because I was to be the next Jussi Bjoerling. Pavarotti was still in Italy! But stay I did! Cantor Ehrenberg always treated us with the utmost respect and kindness. He was concerned for our safety, and always worried cibout my parking down the hill on Riverside Drive.
When the synagogue moved to its present location, he was distressed at the parking problem for me. I was the only one who traveled by car at that time. Up until his retirement, every Friday evening he would have his car parked on Cabrini Boulevard. I would ring the bell and he would come down and put his car in the garage so that I would have a hassle-free parking space. On some occasions, if he was unable to get a parking space himself, he would arrange for me to park in the garage at Cabrini. That's the kind of gentlenan he was! I never heard an unkind word from his lips. One time, when our son Rob was about 2 years old, we brought him to services on a Friday night because we could not get a sitter.
We instructed him very carefully that this was a religious service, and that he would have to be very quiet. When Cantor entered the room, he greeted las with his usual enthsiasm. You all remember what a resonant voice he had. Thereafter, whenever we would meet Cantor V at any social event, he always greeted us with a mock "Shhhhhl" He never forgot that incident , and Paula to this day tells this story.
Cantor was utterly charmed by children. Sometime back in the 70 's. Cantor and I were discussing religion, as both of us were fond to do. He said something vdiich I have never forgotten. I have always believed that there is more that binds us than separates las. That s a great idea. I can study Hebrew and Jewish-Christian relations. At age 53 I began work on my ftosters degree, and hope some day to study Hebrew at a Jewish saninary.
I have written a paper on anti-Semitism in the church, which I hope some day to turn into a book on the subject, and I can think of no better way to honor his memory than to dedicate the book to him. Thank you, Henry, for all your love and concern, thank you for being a model for me, and for each one of us. Rabbi Lehman, for all your encouragement and suggestions about books to read. God bless each one of you, and Shalom! Please accept my deep regrets that I will be unable to join you on Sunday at your special ceremony commemorating the 55th anniversary of "Kristallnacht.
Otherwise, I would certainly be in attendance for an event that is so significant to our community. The whole world should recognize that "Kristallnacht" is truly a day that should "live in infamy," as President Roosevelt characterized the bombing of Pearl Harbor. It was a profound warning to the Jewish people and to the rest of the world that many tragically chose to ignore. Remembering "Kristallnacht" is our debt to the innocent victims of the Nazis and our obligation to future generations.
I truly appreciate your kind invitation to Sunday's event. Please convey my regrets and appreciation to your I hope to be with you at next year's ceremony. Sincerely, C ichels congregation. Faust comes to a Jew to borrow money. The money is lent but only if the se- curlty is one of Fausts legs. It is then sawed off but can not be re- turned when Faust comes to redeem his pledge! In the salons of Berlin especially; it signified a mutuality which led to dangerous illusions regarding the rature of the people. In the 19th century that tensions truly came Into focus, helped by political, economic as well as social forces.
There seems no question that the principles of emancipation enunciated by the Napoleonic forces filtered even into Germany and remained as part of the local states. And the Jews were ready to seeds of liis- be "Germans" but in this frame of r. Some, In order to attain greater place In German society, used the way of conversion, notably Heine and Boern. In , for example, in Baden, the Supreme Jewish Israelite Council desired to change patterns of Jewish education so that Jews could attain the same 3 cultural and spiritual standards as others.
It was in the sense of this last option that we saw the emergence of new movements: The idea was to renounce ethnic distinctl vemens so that the German Jew might "fit ln" yan attitude countered with yet another group led by Samson Raphael Harsch, later known as the founder of "neo-orthodoxy". The Jews, of course, were not the only group that failed to understand the chauvenlsm but for the Jews It proved to be a fatal mistake. Hess' book was an antecedent of Heril ' g Judenstaat ; his title: Rome ajnd Jerusale m.
Goethe in literature and Wagner in music.. The Jewish population grew but was never a significant statistic in German life; even at the end of the 18th century, Jews lived in scattered small communities with, per- haps, no more than a dozen families in each of these communities. The large cities held perhpps a hundred or two hundred families, again total- ing no more than two thousand souls. But this trend brought with it many changes: Jews entered professions, obtained education, became a major factor in the merchant class, established themselves as bankers and as they settled into their communities, established Synagogues.
It was these buildings which were to be destroyed within 50 to 75 years. At the same time, the population figures generally remained the same so that as late as the census indicated that there were but , Jews in Germany. Of these, one-third lived in Berlin, another third in the other large cities, while the remaining third lived in different places with organized Jewish communities and another places where there were no organized Jewish communities.
But these figures do not tell the Whole Of the story, nor the need for the Synagogues or t. Finally , "German Jawry waz among the first communities to feel the effects of the practice of birth control. The universality of 19th century German Jewry indicated their optimism; symbolically, God, Nature and Goethe represented Emil Lydwigs faith; baptism was not jieen as an affoont against Judaism but i 11 the embrace of a religion of "human!

Partly it is due to the fact that one never knows when the job is really finished. For example, I accidentally came in contact with the Cincinnati branch only a month ago, although I had known of their existence for many years! The first volume, which we would like to complete within three months, will contain the complete family, which we have traced back to ca. We will return the originals unharmed. There will also be brief biographical sketches and up-to-date directory of addresses and phone numbers of each known relative. The volume will be in looseleaf form so that it can easily be updated and revised. The second volume will contain the story of the background from which the family came. This will contain a description of Hessloch and Eppelsheim in Rheinhessen, where the family originated, and comment on the social, economic and religious realities of the times when the first members emigrated to this country.
This section will also include a history of the family, pieced together through interviews, including family developments, and achievements of which there are many! I cannot begin working on the second volume until January 20, , when I will have completed a writing assignment for a psychiatric textbook. Hopefully, the second volume could appear within a year.
As I have just turned 77, it is high time to do so! Judy and I hope that you will complete the enclosed forms as soon as possible. We hope you will understand and forgive any errors. I am sure you have a good idea of the difficulty of avoiding them. If you knew Judy and me, you would know how eagerly we are trying to record everything accurately.
